Through the fierce Canadian winters, many Canadians look forward to the celebration of Victoria Day as the beginning of a much wanted (and needed) summer. Canadians celebrate Victoria Day in honour of both Queen Victoria’s birthday and the current reigning Canadian sovereign’s official birthday. Victoria Day has been a day of celebration for Canadians dating back to 1854, where over 5000 people converged in downtown Toronto to celebrate Queen Victoria’s birthday. Today, many cities hold parades to mark this event and many prominent firework displays are visible.
Accordingly, the Canadians at the University of Buckingham re-created this beloved long weekend on Monday 18 May. A large barbecue was hosted and featured many foods that Canadians miss dearly: Kraft Dinner, Swiss Chalet and Tim Hortons. Although the weather was not co-operating with them initially, their spirits managed to persuade the sun to shine through. Staff, students and local residents joined them in the celebrations which ended with a triumphant fireworks display on the back field.
Big thanks are in order to those who helped plan this event, and an even bigger thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate the event.
