Buckingham’s win in Mooting Competition

The mooting teamThe first round of the Weekly Law Reports Annual Mooting Competition took place on 10 November, with the University of Buckingham competing away at St John’s College, Oxford.

The University advocates were Selvyn Hawkins and Kimberleigh Malyan, who were acting for the respondents on a law of defamation problem. It concerned an appeal to the Supreme Court, and the case was heard by Mr Richard Benson, QC.

The advocates were impressive throughout and the feedback from the judge was, without a doubt, extremely positive. Mr Hawkins was characterised as “a rising star for the Bar” whilst Ms Malyan was described as “an impressive advocate”. Important accolades coming from an experienced QC at the Bar and not to be taken lightly!

Dr Gregory Ioannidis, Senior Lecturer in Law, says: “I am very proud of them. They have worked hard and shown they possess the perseverance and dedication required for success at the Bar. They made Buckingham proud yesterday and it was evident in the public gallery and the audience who the winners were before the result was announced! We shall continue to maintain the traditional values of advocacy at Buckingham and remain one of the strongest institutions in the country for mooting.”

Dr Ioannidis would like to thank Dr Carol Brennan who accompanied the team and worked with them on the law of defamation, Lizzie Horn and Sheena Hopkins for their administrative support, and the Dean of Law and Dr Sarah Sargent for their continuous support.
