Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) September Teaching post in a school Level of English required Full-time (school-based)

Course outline

The PGCE with QTS course is available to teachers who are currently employed in maintained or independent schools in the UK. It is available at both primary and secondary level. At secondary level it can be offered to teachers in all subjects (subject to availability).

Teachers undertaking this course must have a degree (or equivalent), a GCSE grade C minimum qualification in English and mathematics (and science for primary courses), and teach across two consecutive age ranges. Teachers applying for the primary PGCE with QTS will also need to be teaching across the three core primary subjects (English, mathematics and science). Teachers will also be expected to undertake a teaching placement in a state maintained school, the period of which will be determined upon interview.

The focus of the course is upon classroom practice, although trainees will also have to complete 3 written assignments. Each trainee will be assigned a mentor within their school and also a University tutor, who will visit them once each term to assess their progress (in negotiation with the school mentor) and guide their development.

Teaching methods

The PGCE with QTS consists of an individualised programme of school-based training, combined with termly three-day residential meetings at Buckingham. The course encourages reflective practice, focussing on the subjects being taught, the craft of the classroom and the underpinning educational values of the teacher. It is fully compliant with the Government’s standards for qualified teacher status. It thus gives successful students the right to teach in state schools as well as in the independent sector.
