Course Outline

This honours programme is aimed at those who want to explore the wider world as a journalist. It combines a practical, hands-on major in Journalism, aimed at developing first-class production skills in online, print and broadcast media, with a minor in an interdisciplinary field that develops your understanding of international politics and history. In particular it will train you in a broad range of essential and advanced journalistic principles and writing / production techniques. The programme draws on the close current and historic alliance between politics, the communicative media, and the complex role of the press and broadcasting in the mediation of politics to the public.

Teaching Method

The Journalism major programmes at the University of Buckingham offer students small student: tutor ratios (8:1) with a dedicated media lab at their disposal. The work is production-based, allowing students to graduate from the programme with a portfolio to present to potential employers.

This can include press journalism (news stories, features, interviews), a website (created by the student as part of the Online Media module), video and sound packages for Broadcast Journalism (for Journalism minors) or an advertising campaign (Media Studies minors).

Students also learn to use industry-standard software including InDesign, Photoshop and Final Cut Pro as well as DV cameras and digital still cameras.
