Bachelor of Arts (BA Hons) January July September A-level: BBC-BCC Level of English required Full-time Q3PM Exam and written assignment

Course Outline

This innovative programme combines the study of both English literature and the English language in its many varieties and uses with a minor programme that introduces students to a wide range of skills and disciplines associated with the use of English in the media, communications and journalism. It differs from the alternative combination of English Studies with Media Communications in the emphasis placed, in the last half-year of study, on preparing students for work specifically as a journalist. Core courses in Broadcast Journalism and Photojournalism allow you to specialise within the field and acquire key skills and understanding of the structure, design and language of these visual media. This programme is primarily aimed at native and second language speakers of English, or very advanced EFL speakers. An alternative programme for very advanced EFL speakers is English Studies with Media Communications . For competent EFL speakers, the Communication (EFL) and Media Studies programme offers a degree with a related but somewhat different focus.

Applicants to this programme are encouraged to apply for a Sir Ray Tindle Journalism Scholarship.

Teaching Method

The Media minor programmes at the University of Buckingham offer students small student: tutor ratios (8:1) with a dedicated media lab at their disposal. The work is production-based, allowing students to graduate from the programme with a portfolio to present to potential employers.

This can include press journalism (news stories, features, interviews), a website (created by the student as part of the Online Media module), video and sound packages for Broadcast Journalism (for Journalism minors) or an advertising campaign (Media Studies minors).

Students also learn to use industry-standard software including QuarkXpress, CoolEdit and Photoshop, as well as DV cameras and digital still cameras.
