MA TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)
Our MA programme has been designed for non-native speakers of English who want to acquire an in-depth knowledge of English and how to teach it, and also to further their career prospects with the award of a postgraduate degree in this specialised field.

- Normal entry qualifications: university degree with good English.
- Open to graduates without teacher training.
- 8 main subject courses, plus 4 added skills and methods courses.
- No dissertation necessary.
- Tuition fees the same for all students.
Key details
- Designed specifically with the needs of overseas students in mind (not simply adapted for foreign students).
- Pre- TESOL course available for students without the normal background / qualifications.
- Suitably trained / experienced teachers exempt from some skills and methods courses (project instead).
- Maximum application of theory to practice, together with school visits and classroom observation and peer teaching.
- Courses / projects instead of dissertation.
- No financial discrimination between students from different countries.
Entry requirements
- You normally need a good university degree in English Language or Literature or a related subject taught in English.
- Your English level should be equivalent to IELTS 6.5 ( TOEFL 580 (paper) or 233 (computer) + TWE 5.0).
- Teacher training is not essential but preferred and tutoring experience is helpful.
Graduates without the above qualifications may be considered, but usually have to complete Pre- TESOL courses before the main MA TESOL programme.
Teaching staff and study facilities
The team of lecturers and tutors for the MA TESOL programme is drawn from the permanent, full-time and part-time English Language Studies / EFL staff, plus guest speakers.
The MA TESOL programme is taught in the University's English Centre, with teaching and self-access language learning facilities: 20-booth AAC language laboratory, conference interpreting laboratory / media studio, audio-active laboratory, TV / satellite / video / computer ( CALL ) facilities, and language teaching suites.

Teaching and Learning
- Courses are taught by a mix of lectures, seminars, or workshops.
- Students take 3 courses per term (x 4 terms), with 4 weekly contact hours per course (= 12 hours per week).
- The average total weekly study load is 45 hours.
Assessment and Results
Students are assessed usually by termly written assignments (term papers and teaching / materials evaluation, together with other course work, or occasionally with a test) depending on the particular course.
Successful students' final results are classified as: Pass, Merit or Distinction.
