Applied Publication Design
Course leader:
Tony Cohen (email: anthony.cohen@buckingham.ac.uk)
One term: 15 units
This course follows on from Publication Design which introduced students to image manipulation, desktop publishing, its place in the print production process and the use of industry-standard software. Building on this knowledge, the course is based around four design projects exploring different kinds of publications: a brochure, a CD, an illustrated book and a magazine article. Students are provided with text and images and encouraged to produce their own creative solutions using InDesign and Photoshop software.
On completion, students will have gained:
- significant practical skill in the use of today's PC/Mac applications to deliver / enhance a message.
- an ability to produce work showing near-professional competence in operational aspects of media production technologies.
- ability to style and layout illustrated pages.
- ability to apply design knowledge to styling a commercial document for maximum impact.
- ability to analyse examples of graphic design, and demonstrate the exercise of critical judgement in the understanding and evaluation of these forms in written analysis.
The course is assessed by:
- projects (60%)
- a practical exam (40%)
