Applied Publication Design

Home   >>   English   >>   Applied Publication Design

Course leader: Tony Cohen (email: anthony.cohen@buckingham.ac.uk)
One term: 15 units

This course follows on from Publication Design which introduced students to image manipulation, desktop publishing, its place in the print production process and the use of industry-standard software. Building on this knowledge, the course is based around four design projects exploring different kinds of publications: a brochure, a CD, an illustrated book and a magazine article. Students are provided with text and images and encouraged to produce their own creative solutions using InDesign and Photoshop software.

On completion, students will have gained:

  1. significant practical skill in the use of today's PC/Mac applications to deliver / enhance a message.
  2. an ability to produce work showing near-professional competence in operational aspects of media production technologies.
  3. ability to style and layout illustrated pages.
  4. ability to apply design knowledge to styling a commercial document for maximum impact.
  5. ability to analyse examples of graphic design, and demonstrate the exercise of critical judgement in the understanding and evaluation of these forms in written analysis.

The course is assessed by:

  • projects (60%)
  • a practical exam (40%)
