Communication / Media (combined honours)

Home   >>   English   >>   Communication / Media (combined honours)

Media and communication are now very dominant within the world culture, and the serious study of media, journalism and communication involves a wide range of subjects, from inter-cultural / inter-personal communication, to the relationship between language and power and politics, to the practical skills-based study of media campaigns, photojournalism, news management, PR and advertising. More…

You will see from the links at the right of this page that the four BA honours degrees in this area offer different emphases. They combine the in-depth study of language, media, journalism and literature / writing in different ways.

As with the rest of Humanities, Communication / Media maintains small-group teaching, disappearing at other universities, allowing a real immersion in the subject, and thoughtfulness and care in the teaching. There are dedicated computer / media suites for students, and the seminar and lecture rooms in the Chandos Road Building are comfortable and well furnished. The special reading room in the central library, the Comino Room, has large holdings in relation to the degrees. There is also an English Language resource room.

Macaulay IyayiI am just arranging an interview with Mark Thompson, Director-General of the BBC, via his PA, to learn about Media Management at a senior management level and the growth of online media. As you can see, ambition - in the best sense - seems a way of life here, and my teachers have wanted me to aim high. I've felt challenged but supported. With a clear career aim, I wanted lecturers who had practised for top media companies, and also an international environment, and that's what I've found. My hard work was eventually rewarded with a Sir Ray Tindle Scholarship, of which I'm proud. Buckingham, I hope, has an eye for talent!
