About the Department
The English Department is a friendly place with very high aspirations for each of its students, both during the time of their degree and in the wider world. The academic advantages most often cited for studying with us are:
- internationally reputed teaching staff in English and Journalism
- excellent student:staff ratio (7.8 students per teacher). There is time for personal attention and real learning.
- positive rapport with staff. You are part of a community within which you are valued and encouraged to do well.
- exciting work placements, usually London-based. These are typically in the media communications industries for students to get hands-on experience. There is no better way of getting into a career later than having relevant work experience as a student.
The financial advantages most often cited for studying with us are
- keeping the overall cost of university down through the intense 2-year pathway to a full BA honours degree
- Sir Ray Tindle Journalism Scholarships. These are available on the following BA programmes: English Literature with Journalism, English Studies with Journalism.

Dickens Journals Online (DJO) a major project to digitise and make available online over 40 volumes of Household Words and All the Year Round, the phenomenally popular Victorian magazines edited by Dickens between 1850 and 1870.
