What does CEER
do?
The Centre for Education and Employment Research, directed by
Professor Alan Smithers and Dr Pamela Robinson, specialises in
applied research. It takes as its main task the accurate
description and interpretation of the current state of education
for policymakers, practitioners and others who make education
happen, rather than for academic educationists. It also undertakes
consultancy and conducts confidential reviews.
What recent work has
been carried out?
Recent work carried out by the Centre includes studies of teacher
provision, international comparisons of educational achievement,
qualifications structures, the re-formation of further education,
flows into science and engineering, access to higher education,
co-education, technology in schools and vocational education.
Confidential evaluations have been carried out for, among others:
the Royal Society, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Nuffield
Foundation, the Sutton Trust, the Engineering and Physical Sciences
Research Council, the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research
Council, Sefton LEA and Stockport Learning Partnership.
Who undertakes the
research?
The research is undertaken personally by Professor Smithers and Dr
Pamela Robinson, Senior Research Fellow in the Centre, with the
support of an IT specialist (Mandy-Diana Coughlan), research
assistants appointed to particular projects, PhD students and a
team of 20 interviewers and clerical assistants.
