Philip previously taught law at undergraduate level at Queen’s University, Belfast and the University of Swansea, in a variety of legal subjects.

He completed his doctoral thesis on the Rule of Forfeiture and Social Security Law at the University of Southampton in 2003 and intends to re-edit the thesis as a monograph.

He teaches Constitutional and Administrative Law, EU Law, and the Law of Evidence, and his research interests include social security law, social policy and the law, law and citizenship, and multiculturalism and the law.
