Senior Lecturer in Law
A well known and internationally recognised sports lawyer, Gregory Ioannidis is a senior lecturer in Sports Law at Buckingham and a practising advocate specialising in sports law, arbitration and litigation. He teaches Contract Law and Legal Skills & Procedure and he is responsible for the development and practical legal training of the students. His PhD is based on the criminalisation of doping in sport and his research concentrates on issues of doping in sport and other regulatory issues.
He has advised and represented a number of high profile sports personalities and governing bodies on issues of doping and other sports law related matters. One of his most notable cases was the Greek Sprinters case [Mr Kenteris and Ms Thanou] in 2006 where he acted as their Counsel and he successfully negotiated an out-of-court settlement with the IAAF. He appears regularly before the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland, as well as FIFA’s Dispute Resolution Chamber, where he deals with a number of different applications ranging from doping in sport to players’ contracts and transfers, European competition law, human rights and regulatory issues. Dr Ioannidis was voted “in the top 20 of the world’s most influential sports lawyers” by Sports Business International magazine in November 2009.
Gregory has published widely in a number of journals and he is co-author of “Drugs, health and sporting values” with Edward Grayson in O’Leary, J. (ed.), Drugs and Doping in Sport: Socio-Legal Perspectives (London: Cavendish, 2001) and “The legal regulation of sporting activities in Greece” in A. Caiger & S. Gardiner (eds), Professional Sport in the EU (The Hague: Asser, 2000). He also writes a Sports Law blog.
