23 February 2005 – Jon Arch gives invited lecture on thermogenesis and energy expenditure
Jon Arch, Deputy Director of Metabolic Research, Clore Laboratory, University of Buckingham, UK, gave an invited talk on ‘Stimulation of Thermogenesis and Other Interventions in Energy Metabolism’ at SMi’s conference on Obesity and Related Disorders, held in London, UK, 21–22 February 2005. Jon argued that stimulation of energy expenditure is a logical approach to the treatment of obesity because low energy expenditure is part of the problem. It does not have to be so marked as to make you feel hot, it will not result in increased food intake, and although thermogenic drugs may produce slower weight loss than anorectic drugs, weight loss in the long term may be greater. Added to this, if thermogenic drugs act peripherally, and improve insulin sensitivity and dyslipidemia, they are likely to be viewed more favourably than anorectic drugs. Jon went on to review a number of possible targets for such drugs and describe some issues involved in validating the targets.
