Business Psychology Course Leader: Dr Jane Tapsell

One term (15 units)

This course is taught in the Winter Term and focuses on people's behaviour, thoughts and emotions related to their work. The course will enable students to learn about the psychology of people at work and explore how this knowledge is used to help people get the most out of work i.e. to reach their potential and maximise their satisfaction. Students will consider how ideas from psychology are used to increase people's effectiveness at work and how these ideas can assist in the development of personal and organisational change needed by people and organisations.

The following topics are covered on this course:

  • business psychology: historical and current perspectives, practices and principles
  • concepts of the person in psychology and the individual difference approach
  • personnel selection and assessment
  • occupational stress: its causes, consequences and management
  • work satisfaction, job satisfaction and organisational commitment
  • ergonomics and consumer psychology
  • working conditions and safety

The course is assessed by both course work (30%) and written examination (70%).
