Sabah Jassim has a BSc and an MSc from Baghdad University and a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Wales. He is Professor of Mathematics. He is also a visiting lecturer at City University, London, and Fachhochschule Wedel, Germany.

He is Head of the Department of Applied Computing and teaches various courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level. These include Information Security, cryptography for e-Commerce, Mathematics and Algorithms. He also supervises research students.

Professor Chris Adams holds the chair of computer science in the Department and is mostly involved in research and the teaching of postgraduate students, both MSc and PhD . He holds a joint appointment with the Rutherford Laboratory where he works in the area of high speed computer networks, video compression and radio frequency broadcast networks. In recent years work has focused on a number of EU projects which have included CHARISMA (workflow and electronic documents), INK (video and TV on demand) and currently EMBRACE (broadband radio frequency networks). This work has been done in collaboration with a number of groups from different countries. One relationship with a particular group at the Technical University Graz (Austria) has grown into a close partnership with his working and teaching in Graz during the autumn.

Harin holds a BSc in Information Systems and a DPhil in Computing, both from the University of Buckingham. During the latter stages of his DPhil at Buckingham, he worked on the EU-funded SecurePhone project as a Research Associate, which was followed by a post-doctoral position at Gray Cancer Institute (now the Gray Institute for Radiation Oncology & Biology, University of Oxford). He rejoined the Department in 2008 to continue his research in biometrics and automated biomedical image analysis and to assist in the supervision of research students. Harin is currently a Research Lecturer in Computer Science and he teaches Fundamentals of Computing, Image Processing, Software Engineering and Software Project Management at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. He is also the Admissions Tutor for taught degree programmes.

Harin's research interests are: face recognition in constrained devices; context-aware adaptive biometric systems; biometric template security and user privacy; automated analysis of biomedical images and biological assays; content-based image / video indexing; and ICT in education.

Naseer Al-Jawad has a BSc (Basrah, Iraq), an MSc (Baghdad, Iraq) and a PhD (Buckingham) in Computer Science. He has a long experience in teaching various computing courses at Baghdad University and Applied Science University in Jordan. The courses he has taught have included programming, data structures, file processing and algorithms. At Buckingham, Dr Al-Jawad teaches different courses like Fundamentals of Computing, Multimedia Systems, Networking, Web Technologies, and Programming at different levels. He supervises undergraduate and postgraduate projects.

Dr Al-Jawad has undertaken a variety of wavelet-based research in image processing including: feature extraction, image/video compression, image quality, and content-based video retrieval.

Hongbo Du holds a BSc from Beijing University of Science and Technology, and an MSc in Computer Studies and MPhil in Computing both from the University of Essex. At Buckingham, Hongbo is a lecturer in Computer Science. He has long experience in teaching various courses on the Computing programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Currently he is responsible for teaching Database and Data Mining courses, Human-Computer Interaction and Programming. He is also the programme director for the taught postgraduate programmes, including the MSc in Innovative Computing and Postgraduate Diploma in Computing. Hongbo has recently been involved, as the grant holder of a European Tempus project (JEP-41058-2006), in developing the MSc in Computer Graphics for the Media Industry at Sarajevo School of Science and Technology, a partner institution of Buckingham. Between 1998 and 2004, Hongbo was also a visiting lecturer at City University, London.

Mr Du's primary area of research is database systems and data mining. He is interested broadly in data mining techniques and their applications in various problems. He is currently interested in the application of data mining techniques in image and biological data. He is also interested in human-computer interaction and visual languages, and supervising research students in these areas.

Mrs Ayser Ali holds a BSc In Architecture from the University of Baghdad, and an MSc in Computing from the University of Buckingham. She has worked as a part-time tutor / lecturer in the Applied Computing Department since 2000. She teaches many different skills courses for both undergraduate and postgraduate students within the University (including Law, Business, and Languages students), as well as teaching a range of computing, database and mathematics courses. During 2005-6 she worked with the research group in the Department on building a video database for research purposes. Her interests include databases, designing the graphical user interface, and the use of computing in business.

Kenneth Langlands Kenneth Langlands, BSc, PhD (Edinburgh)

A graduate of the University of Edinburgh, Dr Langlands studied Genetics before going on to gain a PhD from the Department of Haematology. This was followed by postdoctoral research at the Universities of Bristol, Pittsburgh and Cambridge before moving to Buckingham to establish a new Bioinformatics MSc curriculum. He has written numerous research papers and maintains an active research programme in the Clore Laboratory at Buckingham, covering molecular aspects of dermatological disease. Dr Langlands is a member of the Society for Investigative Dermatology and sits on the advisory board of the Open Dermatology Journal.

Dr Langlands teaches the Bioinformatics element in the taught MSc in Innovative Computing programme, and also jointly supervises postgraduate students in the Department.

Prof. Lai is a visiting professor from Greenwich University, School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences; he is providing his long experience in supervising MSc and possible PhD students in the Department. Prof. Lai's research interests are in: scientific computing and algorithms; numerical mathematics; image processing; inverse problems; smart clothing materials; financial computing; pharmacokinetics; noise and environment; ground water usage and contamination.

Julie Leach is the Administrator of the Applied Computing and Psychology Departments and became a member of the University staff in February 1991, working initially for the Student Support Department. Julie joined Applied Computing / Psychology in January 2000.

Outside of her work as a secretary, Julie runs a touch typing course during non-exam terms, using the University facilities. Her pastimes include keeping fit and (although struggling!) she is trying hard to learn Italian.
