Required for September 2012 – One Year Fixed Term Contract
Part-time Tutor in French Decorative Arts
for MA in Decorative Arts and Historic Interiors at the Wallace Collection

The University of Buckingham is the UK’s only independent University with a royal charter. It is committed to excellence and to providing an outstanding service to its students. The University was rated top in the National Student Satisfaction survey for the past six years.

The University of Buckingham is seeking to recruit a well-qualified and experienced tutor in French eighteenth-century decorative arts and interiors to teach on the collaborative MA programme in French and British decorative arts and historic interiors which is run jointly with the Wallace Collection, starting in September 2012.

Candidates should have a degree in History of Art, preferably a higher degree, extensive knowledge of the French decorative arts and interiors c.1660 – c.1820, relevant Higher Education teaching experience and must be proficient in written and spoken French. Ideally candidates should have some knowledge of nineteenth-century collecting of the ancien régime and revivalism; some curatorial experience would also be an advantage.

The course is based at the Wallace Collection and draws upon the riches of the Museum’s renowned collections of French fine and decorative arts. The successful candidate will be expected to teach on average one day each week during the two taught terms. In addition there will be two all-day class trips and a residential study week in Paris, which the tutor will be required to lead. The tutor will be required to supervise museum-based project work, and to supervise and mark dissertations

Salary is likely to be in the region of £29,473-£33,810 per annum, pro rata, but will depend on qualifications and experience. Although this is initially a one-year fixed-term appointment, for the right candidate we anticipate future opportunities for expanding the role to include some teaching on the projected Design and Decorative Arts courses of the new Buckingham BA in Art History and Heritage Management as well as for supervising MPhil and PhD students.
